It has been a little while since I wrote up the news, so there's a few items to add. Another gig at the Horse and Chains in Bushey is coming up next Sunday, 21st August, 3 - 6 pm with Jonathan Gee,  and again on 25th September, followed by a spot a ta hotel neat Waterloo in the evening. Will update info on that as soon as I have it.

I am sorry to say that the Magick Brothers tour is off. Great shame, butI think next year will be great.

I played the Manchester Jazz Festival with Jon Thorne and Milo Fell, doing an improvised set as we did for the albumk "Isthmus" in 1997. It wasreally goo dto play with them both again. There is a lovely review here:-

The Thursday jazz at Buxton's Cheshire Cheese is continuine apace, and I am finding more pianists to work with, including Steve Brown and Dan Whieldon. This week (Aug 18th) we have Jeremy Sassoon, so I will be playing some guitar, as Jem sings many more bluesy songs, allowing me to fill on guitar.

The weekly jazz sessions at the Cheshire Cheese are going very well. Last Thursday with Paul Kilvington was particulary enjoyable. Next week we have Tom Kincaid.

I have begun what may well become a monthly event at The Horse and Chains, Bushey. Next session will be May 8th  from 4 - 7 pm, with Tim Richards on piano. Tim was the first pianist I worked with regularly back in the 80s in Bristol. It will be great to play with him again.

Another reunion comes at the Manchester Jazz Festival on July 27th, at 11.45 am in Albert Square - the return of "Clark Thorne Fell". This was the improvising trio that recorded "Isthmus" in 1997. Melodic and rhythmic free improvisation from violin bass and drums.

There's a couple of  evening gigs with Spider Mike King coming up at the Beech in Chorlton - Manchester Americana, with plenty of blues. Easter Sunday, April 24th, and the following Sunday,  May 1st.

Chorlton also sees me playing with  The Gypsies of Bohemia at the Lloyds on 22nd April.

26/3/11

Another new venue for my weekly jazz duos. Now we are at the Cheshire Cheese in Buxton, (37-39 High Street, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 6HA

01298 73135). We have had great start over the past three weeks, and it looks like this will be a runner.

10th April sees me playing with  pianist John Cervantes at the Horse and Chains, Bushey. We will start at 4 p.m. This could be a monthly session.

Then it is on to Strood to finish recording an album with "Guy Hatton's Pantechnicon".

There are also more gigs coming up with The Gypsies of Bohemia

New year, new venue. Our weekly Buxton  jazz is moving from the New Inn to the Queen's Head , just across the road. We start next Monday the 10th

Yesterday was a lot of fun. Firstly, I did a gig with the "Gypsies of Bohemia" at Sanctuary in Didsbury. This group is a Hot Club style band that has a really light bouncing swing that I can enjoy playing with. They are not rigid about style, so they let me do my post-bop thing over their Django thing, and I think it works.

I had got to Didsbury too early before the gig, so I found a terrific little cafe bar to spend half an hour in. It is called  "The Art of Tea," on Barlow Moor road and it had a second hand bookshop out the back. Recommended

Then it was off to Stockport's "The Railway" to hear Alan Barnes. He is a great player, full of verve and clarity. He let me sit in, and we played "Night in Tunisia", "In a Sentimental Mood", and probably the fastest version of "Wee" that I have ever done. What larks, eh?

This Thursday sees  the return of Paul Kilvington to the New Inn at Buxton.

5/10/10

The weekly Thursday jazz duos at Buxton's New Inn are going very well, and will be for the foreseeable future. Last Thursday, I was playing with Paul Kilvington, and who should come through the door but Pete Hartley and his wife, all the way from Birmingham. Pete sat in, and I have put up a couple of new videos on Youtube of our jam session.

Very enjoyable gig last night with Richard Wetherall at the New Inn in Buxton. Good turn out from the Buxton jazz lovers. This was the first in a series of four Thursday jazz sessions that may turn into a weekly residency if they go well. Richard is playing like a dream at the moment, and it was a joy to work with him again

Next Thursday 24th June, I will be playing with Uli Elbracht, a very fine guitarist.

Paul and I will be playing at Nat's again on Sunday coming. Also, on Friday, in a restaurant in Hyde - he hasn't given me the address yet.

My teaching ad has appeared in "The Strad". I wonder what response I will get?

We videoed the Sunday Lunch gig at Nat's, and there's now a few pieces on Youtube. I have annoted the "Autumn Leaves" vid to point out where I have taken many of the ideas from in my improvisation.

27/3/10

Last night in Buxton saw a remarkable reunion. Local Buxton band, D.N.A. played to a packed out Orchestra Pit at the Old Hall hotel. They hadn't played together since the tragic death of their singer Mark Dinsdale some years ago. Ben the bass player invited me to join them for a few tunes, and a good, if somewhat emotional,  time was had by all. My old mate Mr Dibs (now of Hawkwind) also sang several songs. It has been quite a while since I have seen all those people in the same place at the same time. Lots of faces from the old days of the Cheshire Cheese, the Ashwood, and the sadly lamented George. Wonderful.
