VIOLINISTS and the VIOLIN
Ben Powell Just discovered this remarkable young jazzer. Beautiful sound and lovely execution. I can hear plenty of Grapelli in his playing, but Ben brings a freshness to the style that I really like.
Mark Feldman My favourite improvising violinist: great range, formidable technique, and a beautiful sound. Just give him a listen. We did an improvised duet recording for BBC Radio 3's "Mixing It" in 2004.
John Blake Jr. The real thing - a true jazz violinist. I loved his playing with McCoy Tyner, and he is still delivering the goods.
Adam Baldych is a young electic violinist from Poland - land of the great Zbigniew Seifert and Michal Urbaniak. He sounds like a cross between Allan Holdsworth and John Scofield.
www.jazzviolin.com Robert Thompson must have got up really early to get this web address. He is based in the San Francisco bay area, and plays a wide range of styles.
http://www.billythompson.co.uk Another fiddling Thompson This one, Billy, played with yet another, the great sax player and band leader Barabara Thompson.
Pete Hartley is also an alumnus of Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia. He organises the Birmingham Fiddle Hell.
Tim Kliphuis is a Hot Club specialist teacher and player. If you want to know how to play like Grappelli - Tim's your man.
Pinchas Zukerman's Teaching Videos. A master player and teacher at work.
Jazzstrings Mark Chung's exhaustive catalogue of jazz string players. Great resource. Everyone is on there.
The Fiddle Forum A top resource for all string players of all genres. Loads of interesting people and plenty of good discussions.
Violinist.com More classically orientated, with many top players and makers involved, v.com can provide great insight into the violin world.
Jazz Violin!!!! A Facebook group for jazz violin run by Colin Greenlaw.
Fiddling Around Possibly the most comprehensive violin/fiddle site on the web. This is fiddler extraordinaire Chris Haigh's site
London Fiddle Convention Does what it says on the tin. Workshops, performances and a contest.
Maestronet Check out auction prices for violin family instruments from different makers.
Buxton Violin Shop Colin Cross makes great violins. I have one.
Atelier Violins This is Jed Murphy's site - he also makes great fiddles, and organises the Bushey Fiddle Hell.
Sean Bishop Sean can offer the finest of stringed instruments and bows in his London shop.
The Amati Collection Great instruments and top restorations from this Brighton-based dealer.
JAZZ and other Music Networks
European Jazz Network This is the site where you can find info on hundreds of jazz musicians, venues, agents, promoters, festivals... ...in fact anything in the world of jazz.
Outside Shore is Marc Sabatella's website. Here you will find one of the best resources on the web for jazz theory. I have used this site pretty often to help clarify issues of harmony, and always send my students here.
Jazzstandards.com gives in depth understanding of the top 1000 standards with descriptions of the tunes' form, what they were written for, who has recorded them, and which sheet music books contain them. Another great resource.
North West Jazz Works All about jazz in the North West of England
Manchester Jazz Festival This is a super festival that has been goingsince 1995. I have played at many of them, with Richard Wetherall, Paul Kilvington, Stephen Grew, my improvising string quartet, Graham Massey and Deep Cabaret.
Musbook A very useful-looking networking site for jazz and classical musicians. Includes news and views as well as a "find-a-teacher" section.
